The Remarried Empress lands on Disney+ this autumn.

A web novel with 2.6 billion views is finally becoming live-action this autumn, with Shin Min-a, Ju Ji-hoon and Lee Jong-suk sharing the leads.

The source material here has racked up roughly 2.6 billion views globally as a webtoon, been translated into ten languages, and built a following in Japan that borders on devotional. Disney+ confirmed on July 27 that the live-action adaptation arrives this autumn, and released a teaser poster of Shin Min-a as Empress Navier alongside it.

An empress gets divorced and proposes to someone else!

Navier is the empress of the Eastern Empire, admired for her intellect and her composure, and married to a man she has known since childhood. Emperor Sovieshu betrays her, takes a low-born mistress, and demands a divorce.

What Navier does next is the whole reason this story blew up. She accepts the divorce and immediately proposes remarriage to Heinrey, the crown prince of the Western Kingdom, which detonates the politics of both empires simultaneously. It's a revenge fantasy with a genuine strategic mind behind it rather than a purely emotional one, and the original web novel has been serialised since 2018, giving it a fanbase that has been waiting years for exactly this.

Four leads, and every one of them is a headline!

Shin Min-a plays Navier, and this is the largest production she has ever led. Most international viewers know her from Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha or My Girlfriend is a Gumiho, and she has built a career on women with quiet steel underneath, which is precisely what this role needs.

Ju Ji-hoon plays Sovieshu, the emperor who sets everything in motion. Notably, he isn't written as a villain: he's an absolute ruler making a catastrophic choice, and Ju has form playing morally compromised royalty from Kingdom onward.

- Lee Jong-suk plays Prince Heinrey, returning to television after military service and a long hiatus, in a role built on hidden motives.

- Lee Se-young is Rashta, the runaway slave turned mistress, and by all accounts far more complicated than a simple antagonist. She proved in The Red Sleeve that she can hold a period drama against a much bigger name, so this casting looks deliberate rather than convenient.

- Choi Dae-hoon, Park Ho-san, Jung Young-joo and Nam Yoon-ho fill out the two courts.

Jo Soo-won directs, with I Hear Your Voice, Pinocchio and 30 but 17 behind him, and Yeo Ji-na of The Uncanny Counter writes alongside Hyun Choong-yeol. Studio N produces. That's a team with real romance and fantasy credentials rather than one assembled purely for scale, which matters for a property this closely watched.

What should you expect from it?

Fantasy romance with serious palace politics attached, rather than fantasy with romance decoration. The world is invented, the empires are fictional, and the conflict is about power as much as it is about hearts. Expect the visual scale that the source material's reputation demands: two royal courts, elaborate costume work, and the kind of production budget Disney+ has been steadily committing to its Korean slate over the last two years.

The interesting complication is that Shin Min-a and Ju Ji-hoon have worked together before, which gives their adversarial dynamic a texture that pure casting can't manufacture. Lee Jong-suk's return is its own news event in Korea after his hiatus, and the cast have been unusually vocal in interviews about how much the source material means to them.

It's a Disney+ exclusive, incidentally, despite some early press confusion suggesting otherwise. There's no Netflix version coming.

That's exactly what Navier spends this entire story refusing to accept, and Shin Min-a should have no trouble finding it.
